Not all dental problems are caused by disease, your pet’s teeth could get broken or fractured by chewing on very hard objects or simply by an accidental injury when they’re playing. Whenever you examine your dog’s mouth, check for broken or worn teeth and encourage your pet to chew on dog chews and toys rather than stones or sticks.

Let’s explore some valuable tips on how to brush your pet’s teeth at home to help prevent dental issues and keep those teeth shining.

1. Start slow and gradually with brushing your pets' teeth

This is a new experience so introducing tooth brushing to your pet requires patience and gentleness. Begin by letting them sniff the toothbrush and toothpaste, giving them a chance to get accustomed to these new items. Gradually incorporate short sessions of touching their teeth and gums with your finger so they become comfortable with the sensation and with you touching around their mouth.

2. Choose the right tools to brush your pet’s teeth

Choosing the right toothbrush and toothpaste for your pet will make everything easier. Use a finger brush or a soft bristled toothbrush designed specifically for pets. For toothpaste avoid using human toothpaste as it can contain ingredients that are harmful to pets. An enzymatic toothpaste made for pets would be best and they come in different flavours like poultry or beef for your pet to enjoy.

3. Use positive reinforcement

Make tooth brushing a positive experience by offering rewards and praise. Use treats or their favourite toys as a reward for their cooperation during the brushing session. Over time they will associate tooth brushing with positive feelings, making the process smoother for both of you.

4. Practice brushing your pets teeth regularly

Consistency is key when it comes to pet dental care. Aim for daily brushing sessions, especially in the beginning, to establish a routine.  As your pet becomes more accustomed to the process, you might be able to reduce the frequency to a few times a week and then eventually build up to daily brushing.

5. Focus on technique

When brushing your pet’s teeth, focus on the outer surfaces where plaque and tartar tend to build up. Gently lift their lips to access the back molars and brush in a circular motion for a minute on each side. Be cautious around the gums to avoid any discomfort and keep brushing sessions short to start with and gradually increase the time as your pet becomes more comfortable.

6. Consider Dental Chews and Toys for your pet

Supplement your pet’s dental care routine with dental chews and toys designed to promote oral health. Brands such as Greenies, and Prozym Dental Sticks are great for daily chewing to help remove any plaque buildup. These items can help reduce plaque and tartar buildup and provide your pet with an enjoyable activity that supports their dental hygiene.

It’s also important to consider the diet you are feeding your dog and change to a diet such as Royal Canin Dental Care if necessary.

7. Visit a Vet for a teeth clean and pet dental checks

You can book your dog into the vet for regular professional dental cleaning if required and visit your vet regularly to chat about a dental care plan as your dog ages. A great way to save on dental treatments is with wellness plan such as Thriving Pets where you can claim $100 on dental, $100 on wellness blood screening, plus much more in your plan for your pet.

8. Train your pet with patience

Remember that building a successful tooth brushing routine with your pet takes time. Some pets may be more resistant than others, but with patience, positive reinforcement, and a gradual approach, most pets can learn to tolerate and even enjoy the process.

Taking care of your pet’s teeth at home is an investment in their overall health and wellbeing. By following these tips and staying consistent, you can help prevent painful dental issues and ensure your pet enjoys a lifetime of healthy smiles. Always remember that if you have concerns or questions about your pet’s dental health, your veterinarian is your best source of advice and guidance.
