What is Neurontin?

Neurontin is an anticonvulsant and analgesic drug that is commonly prescribed by veterinarians to treat seizures, chronic neuropathic pain, and anxiety in dogs. How gabapentin works is not completely understood; however, it is thought to inhibit the release of excitatory neurotransmitters.

What else should I know about Neurontin?

Do not stop the use of Neurontin abruptly without consulting your pet's veterinarian. Rapid discontinuation may lead to withdrawal-precipitated seizures if using the product for seizure treatment. Neurontin should be used with caution in animals that have renal insufficiency. Dosage adjustments may be required. Speak with your veterinarian regarding any dosage adjustments. Use extreme caution with use of an oral solution (Neurontin®) in dogs because it contains 300mg/mL of xylitol. Xylitol can cause low blood sugar or liver damage in dogs at higher doses.

What problems could my dog or cat have with Neurontin?
Possible side effects of Neurontin include: sedation and drowsiness, ataxia, dizziness and peripheral oedema. Report excess sedation or uncoordinated muscle movements to your pet's veterinarian.

How do you use Neurontin?
Give Neurontin as prescribed by your veterinarian. If you miss giving your pet the dose, give it as soon as you remember. If it is close to the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your normal schedule. Do not double up on doses.
